Veering From the Planned Course -- Lee's Journal -- 2/16/98
OK, little pre-info before I get a little laughter in. First, let me mention that this entry is going to be slightly derogatory to one person, but it's really intended as an introspective entry. That said, I'd like to add that I was reading Kathy's newly-updated journal. Now, I know I promised not to insult people anymore, but Kathy's a fictional person, so she doesn't count. She used to be real, but then she made it clear to me that she wanted out of my world. So she got her wish, she is now fictional. So I can talk about her. So let's start with her flashback to what she wrote last New Year's:
I went to a party last night at Ray's house. Everyone was there...Ray (duh!) and his girlfriend Theresa, Joslyn, Brian, Jasen, Carolyn and her roommate Robin, Bardi, Loh, Raph, Sandra, Allison Deutch, and I'm sure I'm forgeting someone! She omitted 2 people. Emily and Guess Who! Yup, I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that it wasn't exactly unintentional. But, wait, it gets better, because this year she plays a little "where are they now" game. So let's have a peek:
Let's see... I don't speak with Ray if possible, I barely know Theresa, I haven't spoken to Joslyn in forever and I suppose I SHOULD care a bit more... but I really don't. I told Jasen if he ever entered my realm of existence again I'd get a restraining order, I enchanged an e-mail with Carolyn, and I saw Bardi driving around once. I spoke online with Sandra several times but we never really had enough in common to have a real friendship. And I had a wonderful conversation with Allison Deutch at the Pantry diner at 2am one day. But there really are new people in my life, and most of those people don't fit in anywhere anymore. OK, the new people in her life are apparently her roommate and some annoying guy named Walter across the hall. She doesn't like Joslyn because Jos did an awful thing to her once: Jos didn't show up at Kathy's house on Kathy's birthday. ::gasp!:: I didn't even remember to wish Dave a happy birthday this year until the end of our phone conversation when he hinted and I looked at my calendar, and he forgave me. Must've been stupid of him. Jasen, in her defense, didn't seem like too amazing a personality. Actually, he seemed pretty damn boring to me. I'm appalled that Carolyn bothered to write back to Kathy even once, and Allison doesn't have any excuse for talking to Kathy unless she just needed SOMEONE to talk to. All of these people who don't fit into Kathy's life anymore all have something in common: they don't fit in because THEY don't like Kathy. In fact, Kathy's friends page, albeit outdated, has her boyfriend, followed (in order of importance, I suppose) by 2 of her sister's friends. That's almost pitiable. Also noteworthy is that once upon a time, Kathy knew close to nothing about computers. Then one day, she started dating Brian, and suddenly she got a job at a computer store. Now she's a CS major. She also now seems to like talking in her journal about comics, which have always been Brian's territory, as long as I've known him. When I first met him in Junior High, in fact, that's all he ever talked about. And she expects people to believe that Brian's copying HER by adding a CS minor. Uh-huh, right. OK, enough with the insults, now for the introspection part. For this one, keep in mind that Kathy's boyfriend Brian has always been a huge comic book fan, and that he worked in a comic book store until he got fired (which, to his credit, pretty immediately preceded the closing down of the store). In the following passage, Kathy discusses why a comic book character called Cyclops is clearly gay.
Another reason is that he took FOREVER to ask Jean Grey out. I did my research and found out that it was almost 60 issues of the comic until they STARTED a relationship and almost 300 until marriage. Considering the fact that they 'liked' each other from issue 1, AND that Jean Grey is a super-powerful psychic, don't you think it should have taken less time? Brian says "He's shy.", I say "He's trying to appear straight without the commitment, but he couldn't avoid it forever. OK, now, overlook the fact that she's talking about comic books. Does this sound familiar? I'm basically Cyclops, only with fewer pieces of blue clothing. Brian, my knight in shining armor (as always), comes to my defense and says "he's shy." It's taking me 60 issues of my life to ask someone out. And it'll take a lot more than 300 issues to marry. It's so sad when my life becomes comparable to comics. I'm going to sleep now.
